Wood Carvings from the Chiquitanía

In the 17th century, the Jesuits brought to Bolivia a passion for art and music which they shared with the local tribes in the area known as the Chiquitanía. The indigenous cultures embraced the Baroque style and made it their own, adding their distinct aesthetic. Today's artisans have revived almost-forgotten 18th century Bolivian arts and now use the same woods, ochre paints, and techniques as their ancestors.

San Miguel Mission Angel

Jesuit priests founded a network of missions in the northeast area of the department of Santa Cruz. They convinced, and sometimes forced, the indigenous peoples to move to the missions and organize villages to support the activities of the parish. Each parish built a spectacular mission church, using native hardwoods and adobe to develop an unusual mestizo-Baroque architecture.
