Mermaids

Chiquitano legends are full of stories of mermaids and river people; these whimsical creatures inevitably found their way into the carvings of the Jesuit mission churches built during the 1700s.

Some stories talk about the mermaids calling women to the river despite the prohibitions of the parish priest during Lent. These mermaids now adorn the pulpit of the church of San Miguel. Other mermaids were know to beckon men to a watery world and abandon their families. Many locals believe that there are an entire race of people who live under the water.

All mermaids featured below are replicas of those carved in the fantastic churches built during the Jesuit mission era. Today's artisans have revived the almost-forgotten arts and now use the same woods, ochre paints, and techniques as their ancestors.
