Jesuit Mission Angels from the Bolivian Chiquitania

These angels are replicas of those carved in the fantastic churches built during the Jesuit mission era. Today's artisans have revived the almost-forgotten arts and now use the same woods, ochre paints, and techniques as their ancestors.

In the 17th century, Jesuit priests founded a network of missions in the northeast area of the department of Santa Cruz. They convinced, and sometimes forced, the indigenous peoples to move to the missions and organize villages to support the activities of the parish. The Jesuits brought with them a passion for art and music which they shared with the local tribes. The indigenous cultures embraced the Baroque style and made it their own, adding their distinct aesthetic.
